All these pop-ups?

This is horrible, every 2 minutes I get a pop-up
stating, "WANT TO GET RID OF THESE POPUPS?? COME BUY OUR
SOFTWARE!!"

Why all these pop-ups? How do I shut the spam off, or
better yet Microsoft Messenger itself. I believe I'm
using the latest version of Microsoft Messenger. I've
never used Messenger, never will, it seems to be serving
no purpose other than to irrate everyone to no end.

I can't find an uninstall, and when I link to the
processes it pulls me to Windows System files that I
can't delete. How do I end this torture? I've been
awake for 38 hours (Not trying to figure this out, this
is just the last hour or so of nuissance), and really
can't think anymore on this issue.

Any help would be great. I'm not paying for a blocker,
that spam is about as irritating as it gets, no way I'm
paying the spam people to get rid of their fekking spam.

I don't see this problem listed anywhere else. I can't
be the only one I assume, since these messages are mass
marketed I assume.

Hello,

Probably this is not Windows messenger (= MSN Messenger) that causes
these Popups, but it is the windows messaging service. With NET SEND
[ip] it is possible to send a message to any pc.

To stop it, just deactivate it somewhere in the management console, or
activate a firewall.

Joseph: I AM WITH YOU!!!! How can these things be
turned off? Ironically, the worst spammers are the ones
trying to sell you the cure! Microsoft seems to be mute
on this, and it is a plague. I have already had to get
a "pop-up" killer for surfing, but this comes right to my
desktop!

Does anyone out there have a cure? PLEASE!! Let us
know...

What you see is not windows messenger but windows
messanging service.
To disable the popups do this

Start, Run, enter "services.msc" and click OK. Scroll down
to "Messenger", select it, right-click and then choose
Properties. Under startup type, choose 'Disabled' and then
choose the 'Stop' button. After the service is stopped,
click OK. No more popups.

For Messenger Service ads:
You need to install or enable a firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q330904

Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve the
real problem.

The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom of a larger
issue. The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.

Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports. You would need a
firewall that controls the traffic.

The above solution will not work if you have AOL as is not compatible with
Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall (ICF). If you have AOL, you should
contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party firewall.

Disable Messenger Service:
Start/Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, click Services.
Go down to "Messenger".
Right click "Messenger" and select Properties.
Hit the Stop Button under Service Status section
Then under Start-up select DISABLE
Click OK and follow prompts
