All squares, No characters

Okay... I transfered some word documents from one system using Word 2000 (WinME) to another system running Word 2003 (WinXP). Some open normally but many open with just tons of squares instead of with text characters. How do I fix this? I really need these documents. Pulling hair out. Thanks for any help.

Hi, levelviii. In the Word 2003 computer, make sure the "files of type" setting in the File>Open menu is "all files" or "all Word files", and NOT "recover text from any file".
