all records before todays date per year

i have records for 5 years, 2000 through 2005

i only want to show the records of those years before todays date

if today is august 2nd, then it shows the records:

2000, before aug 2
2001, before aug 2,
etc.

it doesnt show:
200-, after aug 2
2001 after aug 2nd,
etc

WHERE Format(DateField,"y") < Format(Date(), "y")

(won't be an efficient query though)
