All Of A Sudden...

Hi got a slight problem here. Since yesterday for some odd reason my
computer will not shut down anymore. It looks like it's going to then
bam...it starts to go through post and before I know it, I'm staring at the
welcome sign again. Ugh....this is driving my nuts! The only out of the
ordinary dramatic change was an update from M.S for my video display driver.
After I rebooted I couldn't believe what I was seeing. 600 x 480 screen in 4
bit color! Well, needless to say I rolled back to my previous drivers and
all was well, so I thought. By the way, in the power options
property/advanced I have the "when I press the power button on my computer"
set to shut down. So that's not the problem. Any help would be
appreciated.

Your system has conflicts that it can't resolve.. go to your Device Manager
(in Control Panel under the System icon) and look for entries that have the
! by the side.. if you have recently installed a piece of hardware,
uninstall it and see what happens..

Check general operation.. you are looking for incongruous little things
here, little foibles that have recently appeared.. update drivers where you
can.. clean out temporary internet files.. run 'Error Checking' and defrag
your drive..

You may also have a problem with bad software or malware/spyware.. but check
out the above first,, if no joy, come back to this post for more help..

It sounds as though you have something running that is causing a
"system failure" class error when Windows tries to shut it down and
also that you have the default setting to "restart on failure" in
effect.

Use Control Panel - System - Advanced and click on the Settings button
in the Startup and Recovery (bottom) section. In the Startup and
Recovery window click on the checkbox for "automatically restart" to
clear it then click on Apply and OK as needed to exit.

That should put an end to rebooting. However it may also result in a
"Blue Screen Of Death" STOP message when you shut down. If this does
happen then the contents of the STOP message, including all 4
parameters and any file or function names mentioned will be a direct
clue to the underlying cause of the problem. Post that information
back here if you need help with that.

I shall try that Mike and let you know what I came up with. Though I don't
recall seeing any problems showing up in Device Manager, I shall try
deleting the I.E. Temp Files and the other suggestions you suggested.

know what I came up with! Thanks it's nice to know that there are people

Well I'll be damned it worked!! Yeah it took a lot of unsuccessful attempts
at alternative methods. When I finally scandisked and defragmented not
expecting results. To my surprise when I went to shut down the computer
expecting it to restart as it has been lately. It actually shut down!

Thanks Ron for your feedback. It finally shutdown after I ran scandisk and
defragmented the drive. I really appreciate the help!

*NEVER* swallow hardware driver updates from Windows Update.

In fact, unless you have good reason to, do NOT pick a fight with
device drivers or BIOS (i.e. BIOS updates). Thar be dragons.
