All of a sudden my programs can't connect to their servers to upda

I have used Adaware SE Personal, Ewido Free, Spybot S & D for a number of
years now and I have always automatically updated them - no worries. Now all
of a sudden they won't do it anymore. They keep saying error retrieving file
- connection timed out. It is not making any connection with the server. It
looks like something is blocking it on my computer but I don't know what. The
only firewall I have on my computer is Windows and I have added the programs
to the exceptions list. Didn't work. Then I turned off the firewall. Didn't
work. Thing is - in the security centre in control panel it says "at least
one of the firewalls installed on this computer is enabled" but I disabled
Windows firewall and I don't have any others. What is going wrong??? How do I
fix this???

Forgot to say that my computer is a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop, 2GHZ Intel
COre Duo Processor, 80Gb hard drive, 512MB ram. I am using Windows XP Home
Edition Version 2002 Service pack 2, IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp.050329-1536
Service Pack 2. My modem is a D Link DSL G604T wireless router.

Try turning off the antispyware and antivirus software as a test. Turn
them back on before going to other sites, reading mail, etc..
