All new folders are read only

J

J. Kremer

I'm experiencing a really annoying problem - any new
folder I create is automatically created as read-only.
Worse, I can't seem to make the folders read/write. When
I go into the folder properties, uncheck "Read Only" and
submit, the folder is still read only. I have opened the
properties dialog a zillion times and unchecked the
option, but it is rechecked when I go back.

I've tried running ATTRIB <directory name> -R from DOS,
it still doesn't work. I can't get some critical work
done because my applications can't get read access to
these folders. I'm sure there's a simple solution to
this, anybody out there familiar with this problem?

Thanks,
-J

Don't worry about it. It has nothing to do with accrss. You also used the wtong format for attrib. The -r goes before the folder name. But as I said it ain't your problem. Folders are always writable. Read onl;y has no meaning on a folder. Folders are not created read only either. Explorer WON'T tell you what the the read only status on a folder nor will it allow changes.

If you own faulty programs that check the status of a folder and refuse to work - get a patch for it as there is a compat mode for stupid programmers who can't program that lies about the attribute to a program. But the program can write it just thinks it can't cause it's programmers are stupid and don't understand Dos / Windows / NT. Read only has been meaningless on folders for 22 years. It has never been meaningfull.

You'll get more help if you talk about your problem rather than acting like a stupid programmer.

Mr. Candy. Will you please use word wrap. Scrolling up and
down is bad enough but having to scroll side to side to
read your replies is extremely annoying. Thanks. Have fun.

Hi,

Use a newsreader rather than the web interface and you will not have this
problem. Plus, you will find a newsreader much more versatile inaccessing
peer-to-peer support. Here is a link on doing this:

Incidentally, it's not a word wrap issue. David is using quoted printable,
which keeps long links from breaking.
