All folders are read only (sharing not working)

J

Josh Orfanakis

I am trying to share a folder on my XP Pro box as I have for years on my
W2K box but it is not working. I have selected to share the folder on the
network and allow users to change the files. however when I ty to edit a
file (save) or create a file I get denied because files cannot be open for
read.

What is going on? I notice all the folders in the folder (including the
folder) I share are read only. I try to change this but the changes to not
stick.

I googled and see a bunch of references to this read-only folder problem.
However I see no solution.
Does full file sharing not work on XP?

TIA

File sharing works fine on xp if your network is setup correctly.
XP folders are not read only:
XP just marks all folders indeterminate by default. It is a tri-state check
box. Colored in is indeterminate, checked is read-only, unchecked is normal.
The folders are not read-only and should work as normal. Just ignore the
read-only box on folders. If you have a piece of software that is having
problems writing to a folder then try to get an xp
compatible version of the program. Or post the exact problems you're having.
Most likely if it is a well written app then is it not the read-only check
box, more likely a permissions setting.

Here is some info on it:

XP does this by design. In XP the read only attribute
is only used by explorer to see if the folder is a special or a system
folder. Read up on it:
For XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326549
or for other win versions:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;256614

File permissions info:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q308418

After reading the above info you'll see the mark in does not make folders
read-only. So you must have a network config issue.

Can you see all the computers on the network in my network places?

Do you have identical user/password accounts on the machines that are
sharing with the other machines? If not you need to do that. Matching
accounts on each machine is required for shares to work.

Are you using simple file sharing or did you turn that off?
