Aliasing a column header field name

I am linking my access DB to a sharepoint list. The field name in the list
(I have no control over it) is: Prod (Month Start)

I want to change the name of that field to something a little better
(without the pareentheses), but cannot seem to make it work. In Designview,
after setting up my other criteria for the query (by the way, query works
fine), I go to this field and in the field name, enter: StartDate: Prod
(Month Start)

I have also tried StartDate: [Prod (Month Start)]

The problem is, no matter what I do, the output table names the column:
Prod (Month Start).

What might be the issue?

Thanks

Strange. There is another option. I don't like it but it may work. In query
design view right click on field in question and bring up the Properties.
Change the Caption there.

That did the trick. Very odd. Would have expected to see the caption
populated in the properties, but it was not. So, I changed it to what I
wanted, and voila! No explanation for it. The "normal" way works fine on
other fields.

Thanks a million!
