I know alg.exe is used for firewall stuff and at this point want to have it
on. However, occasionally the process will jump to using 60-80% of my
memory, bringing my system to a crawl. It will run like this until I end the
process in task manager.

Does anyone else have this problem? Does this service do anything else (will
I still be able to connect to the internet with it disabled)?

Thanks!!

I may not be the most knowlegdable person here. But here's some information.
While typing this reply with Firewall active with no exceptions and using
DEP, the "alg.exe" is using 3,428K of memory with zero CPU usage. I'm
assuming that I'm about average on that. If you're using more memory and CPU
time then you may have other problems than just that program.

As for not using the firewall, sure. You can still connect to the internet
without it. But I would STRONGLY advise against it.

It is to provide support for third party programs wanting a 'plug in'
for ICS or the Windows Firewall, and *maybe) - I'm not sure, into IE
itself. You need to identify what such plug in is causing the trouble -
best probably is to go to Control Panel - Admin Tools - Services, look
for 'Application Gateway' and click Stop. Then wait for whatever it is
to complain, and hence identify it.
