I have had a desktop & laptop on XP Pro networked and
sharing files through MS Workgroup for 2+ years and
recently the link stopped working. The only change I have
made recently is that I went to the MS Update web site and
let them install the new update program on both of these
machines.

Reading through the posts on this forum I came across a
message from Chuck where he suggested the
following: "...Make sure the browser service is running on
each computer. Control Panel - Administrative Tools -
Services. Verify that the Computer Browser service is
started..."

BINGO!! Works like a champ now!

Something stopped the Browser Service on my Desktop and it
wasn't me. You can decide for your self but to me there is
only one conclusion...

P.S. Thanks Chuck!!!

In XP SP2, the firewall is enabled.
This blocks the browser NetBIOS ports.
So the browser service does not start.

If you enable the F+P sharing exception, the browser service can be
re-started.

The Computer Browser service does not start and event ID 7024 is
logged when you restart your Windows XP Service Pack 2-based
computer:
