Really? I checked a game that was called "Wallmaster", and the first
thing I see in the readme, is, it is SHAREWARE.

you mean wallpipe?
yep, you are right. It is shareware; the file_id.diz didn't mention it. I
had to say : most of the software is freeware.
I have updated the indexes that this software is shareware. Shareware is
limited freeware so that must be the reason
it was on the list. I hope there are not too much surprises left for me.

I "think" that all of the DOS archive programs are shareware. I know
PK has always been shareware. It's been too long to recall arj, zoo,
lha, and the rest, but I do think these might be shareware also.

Shareware was the thing in DOS days. The NE (No Edlin) editor is the
only one I recognize as freeware. This was very rare. That's a pretty
nice editor too. It just doesn't run right in higher versions of Win.

no, you were strongly recommended to pay for the use of pkzip; pkunzip was
free. Just like
the other archivers. I had a pkzip licence and that's why all the programs
are archived by pkzip.
You didn't have to look everywhere for fancy archivers like zoo or ice.

indeed, a lot of flopy based games were shareware. If I remember well there
were level restrictions to play the entire game, but time limited like
today?
Freeware programs aren't that rare. A freeware program demands no support,
administration, tax paying, distribution lines, etc.. You like it or not.
It's more than a fulltime job to handle all the questions if you write
shareware. The missery alone already to support all the graphic cards.

PKZip was always shareware.

Phillip W. Katz died 14 April 2000 at the age of 37.

The long frank recipe was perfected by a German butcher, Johann Georg
Lahner, who lived from 1771 to 1845. He developed such sausages while
working in Frankfurt and later in Vienna. From those towns are derived
the words “frankfurter” and “wiener.”

PKZip was always shareware.

Yes. And no: Versions 1.x where free for noncommercial usage:

| SOFTWARE LICENSE
|
|
| PKZIP (tm) FAST! Create/Update Utility
| PKUNZIP (tm) FAST! Extract Utility
| PKSFX (R) FAST! Self-Extract Utility

| You are free to use, copy and distribute PKZIP, PKUNZIP, and
| PKSFX for NONCOMMERCIAL use if:
|
| No fee is charged for use, copying or distribution.
|
| It is not modified in any way.

A 'sometimes free' kind of Shareware. Later versions did not provide
this possibility of rightful free usage.

No. It's a common mistake which has its root in the unarj program:

From License:
| UNARJ SOURCE CODE:
|
| Available in a separately distributed archive is the program UNARJ.EXE
| and its C source code. UNARJ is a simple ARJ archive extraction
| program.
|
| You may freely use, copy, and distribute UNARJ.EXE, provided that no
| fee is charged for such use, copying or distribution.
|
| This source code is intended to promote the building of utilities to
| support the use of ARJ and ARJ archives.

PkUnzip had always the same license status as the PkZip program with the
same version number. That's why it had been free for personal use up to
v1.x and was non-free at all later.

Freeware programs aren't that rare.

You are right. I have hundreds (if not thousands) of free programs for
DOS on disk. The feeling that one had to pay more often for programs in
past than today results from the distribution channels, IMHO. You had
to *pay* to get a Freeware or Public Domain program on a disk. And if
you used BBS you often payed the same amount of download telephone
charges as you had to pay for a resentful priced Shareware program to
the author(s).

I don't recall many programs that were not shareware. Can you provide
a list of the better freeware programs? As I pointed out in another

freeware Win page. I'd like to add freeware DOS programs...

I can only remember one off hand, which was free (PD), the CED program.
It recorded your command line entries and you could then recall them as
you liked. The reaction of Microsoft was the (not as good) doskey
program.

Argh! Where to start and where to stop?!! I don't like compiling such
lists. Or better said: I *hate* doing so. It's mostly a lot of work
and doesn't achieve anything at all. If I wanted to promote large lists
of freeware downloads I would set up a homepage of my own. Better ask
for a special kind of program you need. And if I come across this
request at a moment when I can afford some time, I'll try to look sth.
up. Or - as often - maybe remember one from scratch.

Anyway, I compiled a completely arbitrary snapshot representing not
even a noticeable percentage of the possible candidates. You should
not only follow the provided links to get the mentioned programs.
Often you'll find many other freeware gems of the same author listed.

I concentrated on useful tools and left the specialized programs.
That seemed a bit more appropriate for such a 'freeware broadcast'.
Because you spoke especially of lacking free DOS archivers I listed
a few more than out of the other categories. But this list *is not*
complete, by far.
