Yes! I am using a FX5900 8x card on a Abit KT7A with AGP 4x slot.
Keyways are fitted to AGP slots to prevent incompatible cards from being
inserted.

So if I have a 1X or 2X slot, then it will run a that speed w/out
problems?

It probably won't even fit in the slot: it's keyed differently. Also, it
requires a lower voltage than those slots use, and AGP 8x cards are
usually not 1x or 2x compatible, only 4x.

Most likely not. There *is* an electrical difference. It's just that when a
new one comes out they usually maintain compatibility one level back, like
and 8x working in 4x, but not all the way to the stone age.

Having said that, there are some 'universal' cards but they're rare.

thanks for the input guys.
my mb is 4x agp v2.0 compliant and the graphics card
is 8x agp v3.0 compliant.so this should be ok?

it should work, but some of the 4x cards are 3.3v - check out the manual on
some of the original Asus 845 boards and they warn against some cards that
were keyed wrong like some ATIs and Matrox models
