sure if the card supports 4xAGp. it should state it on the box or in the
manual.

Almost all 8X cards will run at 4X. Check out the detailed video card
specifications which will indicate if it will work.

I am using ATI AIW 9700 Pro with my P4T5233-C without any problem.
Your motherboard, I believe is similar to mine except with the Via
chipset instead of the Intel chipset. Most 8X AGP cards are 2/4/8X
compatible.

Untrue, I think. 8x capable cards are usually only 8x/4x capable, most
likely due to the large difference in voltages between 8x and 2x (0.7v and
3.3v, respectively.)

Well, I was somewhat wrong. Newer 8x cards are 8x/4x only, it seems to be.
When they first appeared, some were 8x/4x/2x capable. That seemed to mostly
be for compatibility with older motherboards. Since almost all of them are
4x capable now, they don't seem to make new cards that support 2x.

There is no use in speculating. Each card has its own specs and the OP
should look up the specs of the card (not the motherboard).

I´m running a Matrox Millennium P750 (8x agp) on my P4S533 that supports up
to 4x agp.
No problems this far.
Someone told me that the 8x agp is seldom used in todays programs or
games....!
Is that right ?
Anyone...

Also the AGP slot is different IIRC, so won't fit;-)

Will an AGP 8X card work on an AGP 4X motherboard (Asus P4S533)?

Yes.

An AGP 4x card will work in an AGP:
1x, 2x, or 4x slot
An AGP 8x card will work in an AGP:
4x or 8x slot.

An AGP 4x card will work in an AGP:
1x, 2x, or 4x slot
An AGP 8x card will work in an AGP:
4x or 8x slot.

Many AGP8x cards will also work in AGP 2x slots (I'm using one right now.)
The card should be keyed to prevent you from putting it in a slot that can't
support it. I've heard that it's possible for a card to be incorrectly
keyed, but I've never heard of this actually happening. In my personal
experience, if the card will fit in the slot (i.e. if the keys match) it
will work.
