AGP 3.0 Socket won't fit ATI x800xl

A

Alan Duquette

My motherboard supports 8x agp 3.0 but an ATI x800xl won't fit because
of the closed end on the agp socket not being large enough for the
hook at the end of the AGP card. What is up with that?

What motherboard model do you have?

MSI K7N2 Delta 2

I think they call the closed thing at the end of the agp slot a lock
but I can see no way to unlock it to insert the card. MSI seems too
dumb to answer my numerous inquiries about it and it has no references
to it in the manual.

I think I know what kind of lock it is. I have a Biostar
NF4UL-A9 mainboard that has a PCI-E 16x, and an AGP slot (aka XGP).
When I first got it, I didn't have my 7600GT yet, and had to use an
old GF4 Ti4400 AGP card. When I went to install it, I found that the
slot was too small, and there was no lever like other AGP 4x, and 8x
slots had. After staring at it for several minutes like a
"neanderthal", I noticed the slot looked like it was inside a sliding
box. I pulled fowards on it (towards front of case), and it did slide
forward opening the slot up.
Go to the link of my mainboard, and click to enlarge the
image, and look at the white slot next to the 3 blue PCI slots. Does
it look like your AGP slot?

I have that mainboard.

http://www.msi.com.tw/images/product_img/mbd_img/6570E-LSR.jpg

At the inner end of the AGP slot, you can see a litle white thing,
that probably pivots to and away from the slot. I think it works
like a system/RAM memory module holder on that one end. Before
inserting the card, gently push/pivot that litle white thing away
from the rest of the slot (looking down at the pic, that is
rightwards). Then you just stick the card into the slot and that
clip grabs onto the card just like a system/RAM memory module clip.

If now you understand how it is supposed to work, but your card wont
fit, I guess you are out of luck. In that case, I would remove the
obstruction and, if necessary, use hot melt glue to keep the card
from vibrating loose.

Good luck.

Maybe because it's simple.

I hope you don't really expect a manufacturer to provide support for
a product you buy from one of a thousand retail outlets, a product
that is meant for very technically inclined users.

BTW. Please post in context instead of top posting.

I have a picture of a slot that looks the same as mine but I can not
post pictures on this newsgroup. As far as your picture it does not
look too much like mine since mine seems to be a solid piece on the
end as I can see no breaks. Is it safe to cut through it. Maybe the
lock lever is broken off but this is a new board.

Looks close to mine but mine has no lever. It looks like alll the pci
slots only a different color.

according to the link you provided, That's not a normal AGP connector at
all. It's what Biostar calls, an XGP port.

.. Additional Info:
Xtreme Graphics Port is Biostar's unique engineering solution of adding
limited AGP graphics card support to the nForce4 chipset. The XGP slot is
not compatible with all AGP cards but has been tested with AGP cards listed
below.

Looking at the list shown, the ATI x800xl is not listed.

I included a picture that looks like mine. As you can see it has no
lever and seems to be a solid piece. I am refering to the left side
of the slot in the picture.

Um...that board doesn't have an AGP slot. Probably ought to check that
before ordering next time, eh?

So, in fact you don't know what mainboard you have.

Yes. It is MSI k7n2 Delta 2 LSR

Do not cut on it as it would problably ruin it, and void your
warrenty. Did you try sliding it forward as I suggested? I would have
to see your exact AGP slot. I looked at some pics on the net of the
MSI K7N2 Delta 2, but the slots in the pics I seen look like this:
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/show_photo/spo/pro_spo_view.php?UID=436&KIND=1

Here is a better picture of mine.
http://www.amdzone.com/pics/motherboards/biostar/nf4ul-a9/nf4ul-a9.jpg

It's the slot with the yellow sticker on it. It doesn't have a
lever like the AGP slot on the MSI K7N2 Delta I linked above. Other
than that, the only other AGP lock I can think of are the ones that
have a little handle at the end, but instead of lifting up, and
pushing down to lock, and unlock, you push it sideways. It's not
hindged, and is a whole piece of the slot. I seen them on old
motherboards, and haven't seen them in years.

Yes, but it's for AGP videocards. It bridges them over the PCI
bus though. The X800XL will fit fine, and maybe boot up, and work. My
6600GT is not listed either, but it booted fine, and ran 3D games fine
as well, but video files ran like crap, so I had to use my GF4 Ti4400.
There are 4x/8x AGP mainboards that use a slot lock like this as well.

Apparently he doesn't even know what mainboard he has. The
vendor/merchant might have shipped the wrong mainboard in the right
box. Trying to help is pointless IMO.
