I have a Dell Instiron 1150 with XP Home, the PC is brand
new. After installing the XP SP2 update the pc became
very, very slow, (start up, Shut down, opening apps,
opening windows. I uninstalled the SP2 update & the pc
started running fine again. Anyone have any ideas???
Thanks, Dale

Hi Dale,

I have had exactly the same experience with a three month old Dell Inspiron
1150.So far I have emailed Dell and posted to the Windows update site with
no results so far. My 1150 was so slow it took about an hour to uninstall
the SP2!!

I hope that someone knows the answer to our problems.

Richard.

Unfortunately, the only people with the answers will be Dell. Obviously,
there is some proprietary software on the laptops that doesn't play
nice with SP2. Laptops use a lot of proprietary software. If there is
nothing about SP2 in the support section for your model on Dell's site,
I'd grit my teeth and call Dell tech support.

Hi again Dale,

I have not yet had a response to my email to Dell. Please let us know here
the results of your phone calls to them and I will let you know if I hear
anything.

Richard.

XP SP2 IS extreamly slow, I have P4 2.6GHz, 756M memory, and after
installing SP2, the system was becoming sloooooowww. Removed the SP2
fix the problem.

I have had an email from Dell support which details six steps to follow. 1
Clear out start up environment i.e.. Uncheck System INI, Win INI, Services
and start up items. 2 Change performance of foreground and back ground
items.3 Change size of paging file. 4 optimise memory usage. 5 change visual
effects. 6 Perform repair install.

At present I do not have the time to follow the steps particularly as with
SP2 on board the computer is so slow it is virtually stalled. I am also not
convinced that any of the steps will actually fix the conflict between XP
SP2 and the Inspiron 1150 environment.

I will email Dell again to suggest that they pull an Inspiron 1150 ,with the
same specification as mine, off the shelf, install XP SP2 to reproduce the
problem and then come back to me with the necessary fix. The problem is not
just with my or Dale's computers I have found other instances on Dell's own
notice boards.

I found a solution to the problem: roll back the driver for the
processor.

Windows will complain about the driver not being certified, but just
continue anyways.

After restarting it was running back at the normal speed with SP2
installed.

I just ran into the same problem after installing SP2 on an
Inspiron 1150 tonight. Double dog slow until I read your post and
rolled back the processor driver. Thanks!

So does anybody know the cause?

Awesome!

I support computers for a living and had just upgraded a friend of
mine's Inspiron to SP2. I'd been pulling my hair out trying to figure
out what the hell it didn't like. This worked perfectly. Now I don't
feel guilty any more about making her computer run worse than it had.

Incidentally, I also found that having the Synaptic touchpad drivers
slowed things down for some reason - I don't know why. I may try
putting it back on now that the CPU drivers has been rolled back.

Dale and Richard,

I had the same situation. I uninstalled SP2 and all is well. I see
that Dell recommends the latest bios which appears to be A04 (7/2004).
Has anyone tried it with the latest bios and had success?

Thanks,
Lee

My daughter has an insprion 1150 and the same thing happens to her computer
when she installs SP2. Can you explain in detail what you mean about
"rolling back the driver for the processor"?

Thanks,

Missy
