<SNIP>
OK, Leon,
With MainPC reporting
Browsing is NOT active on domain.
and PERRINS2 reporting
Master browser name is: PERRINS2
Master browser is running build 2600
1 backup servers retrieved from master PERRINS2
\\PERRINS2
There are 2 servers in domain MSHOME
We're going to have to look for a firewall or protocol problem. PERRINS2 can
see SMBs from both computers. MainPC sees nothing.

Did you perchance rerun browstat, on both computers, AFTER you started the
server service? If so, how long after? Remember there is latency in the
browser operation.

Chuck
I did ran browstat on an evening on MainPC and the next morning on GamingPC,
I have now run them immediately after the other.
As you can see, I had to start Workstation Services for MainPC(The other one
I didn't)
TCP/IP is enabled on both computers
I am mystified with regard to "firewalls". Surely they need to be enabled
during normal use when connected to the net so what is the point in removing
them whilst setting up a network?
I have tried with them (Zone alarm on both, Norton AV on Mainpc and AVG on
the other) disabled but it made no difference.

Chuck
I have set the following to automatic on the MainPC, they were already in
that state on the GamingPC.
Tcp/IP Netbios etc.
Windows firewall/Internet connection etc.
Workstation
Server
DHCP client.
Are there anymore that I should set?
There is still no sign of the PC's on each other.

So Perrins2 does see Perrins1.
Let's try a rigorous services check on each computer.

Now, you asked a good question about firewalls. You need personal firewalls, to
protect each computer from the other, when you're using the network. Until you
get the network working, that isn't a concern. Generally, we advise removal of
all personal firewalls when problems like this come up. If you will Google or
browse this forum for "Norton AV" or "Zone Alarm", you will find beaucoup
threads where problems have been solved only by un installing. And I don't mean
run an uninstall wizard. Get advice from the vendor - sometimes specifically
for your version of firewall. Be thorough - because something is blocking
Perrins2 from being seen by Perrins1.
