After setting up the network

G

Guest

I have searched through the posts and am getting no-where.
I have set up the network between 2 PC's running XP Pro+SP2.
The icons tell me both local connection are OK.
I am using a Linksys residential gateway and both PC's contact the net.
How do I communicate between the PC's to drive/fileshare and printer share?

Leon,

If you have both computers connected to Internet, then connectivity is OK. Now
look for a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, or other security
component. There are several other possibilities too, and any might be the cause
of your problem. Read this article with an open mind.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html

Or look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net
config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the problem. Read this
article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download
browstat!):

Run the Network Setup Wizard (in Start > All Programs > Accessories >
Communications) on both computers. If the Wizard finds the router's
shared Internet connection, tell it to use that connection.
Otherwise, tell it that the computers connect to the Internet through
a residential gateway (router).

The Wizard will enable file and printer sharing, create a Shared
Documents folder, and share all printers.

If you have a firewall program (Norton, McAfee, PC-cillin, ZoneAlarm,
etc), configure it to allow access by other computers on the local
area network.

To share a folder, right-click it and select Sharing and Security from
the menu.

To see the shared folders on the other computer, click Start > Run,
type the other computer's name in the box as shown below, and click
OK:

\\computer

You might also be able to see the other computer's shared folders in
My Network Places, although that doesn't always work reliably.

That's exactly how I have been setting up the network.
I did it again but still receive the message "\\Perrins2 ( the second PC)

No network provider accepted the given network path.

What can I do now?

The Network Setup Wizard is a good place to start. If your computer isn't
properly setup, though, it won't give you the right results. You'll have to
find the problem.

First, look for a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, or other
security component.

Thanks for your help Chuck.

The PC's still can't see each other but your suggested paths to sort out the
problem are beyond me.

OK, let's try and diagnose the problem, together. Provide "browstat status",
"ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config workstation", from each
computer. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely (download browstat!):

Go to your "Prnters and Faxes" folder, right click on an empty space, select
"add printer", (the "Add Printer Wizard" will then appear). Choose "A
Network Printer or printer attached to another computer" then select "Browse
for Printer". From thereon it should be straight forward.

Good luck,
Brian.

Did you perchance rerun browstat, on both computers, AFTER you started the

Chuck

I did ran browstat on an evening on MainPC and the next morning on GamingPC,
I have now run them immediately after the other.
As you can see, I had to start Workstation Services for MainPC(The other one
I didn't)
TCP/IP is enabled on both computers
I am mystified with regard to "firewalls". Surely they need to be enabled
during normal use when connected to the net so what is the point in removing
them whilst setting up a network?
I have tried with them (Zone alarm on both, Norton AV on Mainpc and AVG on
the other) disabled but it made no difference.

I have set the following to automatic on the MainPC, they were already in
that state on the GamingPC.
Tcp/IP Netbios etc.
Windows firewall/Internet connection etc.
Workstation
Server
DHCP client.

Are there anymore that I should set?

There is still no sign of the PC's on each other.

Here we go Chuck, I hope you can make sense of it.
I have made a txt file for each computer and already I think I have a clue
with regard to the PC's names.
I have called the PC's MAINPC and GAMINGPC but it looks like I have also
called them PERRINS1 and PERRINS2.

Main PC first.

OK, Leon,

With MainPC reporting
Browsing is NOT active on domain.

and PERRINS2 reporting
Master browser name is: PERRINS2
Master browser is running build 2600
1 backup servers retrieved from master PERRINS2
\\PERRINS2
There are 2 servers in domain MSHOME

We're going to have to look for a firewall or protocol problem. PERRINS2 can
see SMBs from both computers. MainPC sees nothing.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html

Did you perchance rerun browstat, on both computers, AFTER you started the
server service? If so, how long after? Remember there is latency in the
browser operation.

So Perrins2 does see Perrins1.

Let's try a rigorous services check on each computer.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/cpsserv-comprehensive-psservice-source.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/cpsserv-comprehensive-psservice-source.html

Now, you asked a good question about firewalls. You need personal firewalls, to
protect each computer from the other, when you're using the network. Until you
get the network working, that isn't a concern. Generally, we advise removal of
all personal firewalls when problems like this come up. If you will Google or
browse this forum for "Norton AV" or "Zone Alarm", you will find beaucoup
threads where problems have been solved only by un installing. And I don't mean
run an uninstall wizard. Get advice from the vendor - sometimes specifically
for your version of firewall. Be thorough - because something is blocking
Perrins2 from being seen by Perrins1.

OK, Leon,

With MainPC reporting
Browsing is NOT active on domain.

and PERRINS2 reporting
Master browser name is: PERRINS2
Master browser is running build 2600
1 backup servers retrieved from master PERRINS2
\\PERRINS2
There are 2 servers in domain MSHOME

We're going to have to look for a firewall or protocol problem. PERRINS2 can
see SMBs from both computers. MainPC sees nothing.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html

Did you perchance rerun browstat, on both computers, AFTER you started the
server service? If so, how long after? Remember there is latency in the
browser operation.

Leon,

Mainly, what it shows, I suspect, is that I don't know yet what's going on here.

What is the significance of 2 runs of CPSServ on each computer, and the
differing results on each? Is the RPC Server running on each computer?
<http://www.dead-eye.net/Windows XP Professional Services Details.htm#Remote Procedure Call (RPC)>
http://www.dead-eye.net/Windows XP Professional Services Details.htm#Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

And please when you copy and paste any log, try not to omit even one line of the
log - specifically the starting or ending line.

What operating system (name, edition, and version) is running on each computer?

I can't seem to reach your last message when I hit the "Reply" button so I
have copied and pasted it here.

I wasn't aware that I had dropped any lines.
I didn't run cpsserv twice. Two readouts showed up at the same time, one
straight into notepad and one in the Command Prompt window which I copied and
pasted into a separate notepad file because I thought they looked different.

What operating system (name, edition, and version) is running on each

I have looked at this page but am afraid I wasn't sure what to do.
In any case I couldn't display your last reply in "Reply" mode.

OK, Leon,

With MainPC reporting
Browsing is NOT active on domain.

and PERRINS2 reporting
Master browser name is: PERRINS2
Master browser is running build 2600
1 backup servers retrieved from master PERRINS2
\\PERRINS2
There are 2 servers in domain MSHOME

We're going to have to look for a firewall or protocol problem. PERRINS2 can
see SMBs from both computers. MainPC sees nothing.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html

Did you perchance rerun browstat, on both computers, AFTER you started the
server service? If so, how long after? Remember there is latency in the
browser operation.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html

Regards

Chuck

I have set the following to automatic on the MainPC, they were already in
that state on the GamingPC.
Tcp/IP Netbios etc.
Windows firewall/Internet connection etc.
Workstation
Server
DHCP client.

Are there anymore that I should set?

There is still no sign of the PC's on each other.

Well, Leon,

From Perrins2:
Browsing is active on domain.
Master browser name is: PERRINS2
Master browser is running build 2600
1 backup servers retrieved from master PERRINS2
\\PERRINS2
There are 2 servers in domain MSHOME on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{1C54F
AF6-4E54-41B0-A2C3-0989C66924EF}

So Perrins2 does see Perrins1.

Let's try a rigorous services check on each computer.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/cpsserv-comprehensive-psservice-source.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/cpsserv-comprehensive-psservice-source.html

Chuck
I have run "cpsserv" and below are the 4-files.(Direct into Notepad & Copy
of listing in Command Promt window)
