Upon saving a worksheet in Excel97, the system takes a
long time to save, and then the entire worksheet's
formatting is askew. The dates will appear as 38052 for
example in the body of the worksheet, but the formula bar
shows it as the correct date. When I check the cell's
format, it is correct as a date format. Also formula
cells display the formula on the sheet, but the formula
bar shows the result. Help! what can I do to correct this?

What file type are you saving it as? Work book? 95/97? wk*?

I'm not sure why this happens when you do your save, but try toggling the
viewing of formulas:

Tools|Options|View tab|Uncheck Formulas

ctrl-` (ctrl-backquote, next to the 1/! on my USA keyboard) is a toggle for
this.

Are you hitting the ESC key to try to interrupt the save? Maybe you're toggling
this view in error.

If that's not it, any chance you have a "helpful" macro at work?
