after removing Blaster Worm can I use System Restore

R

Ralph

I had to take my daughters Dell lap top to a friend that
builds networking computers for large firms in Pittsburgh
to remove the Blaster worm and another viruse. Since he
does not regular work on lap tops and small desk tops he
only removed the virus. But some of my daughters college
work and desk top icons were removed.

My questions is, if I use XP system restore and set it
back to two weeks ago, will I recover her school work and
her desk top icons without recoving the two virus again

Thank-you
Ralph

SR does not monitor "My Documents" or personal folders (among others) so the answer to the 1st question is no.

2nd question just create new icons.

The viruses might be in the SR files, I wouldn't try it.

Are you sure that the school work was deleted?

One more tip on this question. When ever you perform a virus check on your
system turn OFF system restore. The virus scanner will not check the system
restore files. Therefore there is always a possibility that the virus may
not be cleaned.

(I'm not the original poster.) I'm under the impression that if you
turn off system restore, all system restore points are erased.

That's correct. But if the restore points have viruses, you wouldn't want to
use them. Afterward, you would turn system restore back on, then you'd be
creating new, clean restore points.

The main matter here is to get rid of viruses and not concerend abt system
restore points. First save the system.
