After loggin in, Windows logs me out right away!

The PC in question has Windows XP SP2 installed. The problem happened after
changing harddisks. I replaced the existing two harddisks with two new ones,
and I copied the partitions from the old drives properly to the new drives
using Acronis Disk Director. It's working fine uptill now.

I start Windows, and when finally I get a chance to log in (classic login
screen), Windows logs me in, but logs me out right away. The login-logout
cycle takes less than a second, but in between I can see that Windows does
load the display settings (colors, title bar fonts, etc).

Also, I'm not getting any messages or warnings of any kind. I tried logging
in as the regular user who logs in on a daily basis, and I tried logging in
as the local Administrator. After that I tried the same thing in all three
safe modes. All of them logged me out as soon as I logged in.

On the internet, I founf out that there's this Winlogon registry key, that
contains a value Userinit that should be set to
"%systemroot%\system32\userinit.exe,"

When I checked that value by booting the PC using ERD Commander 2005, I
found out that the Userinit value is correct, and should not be the culprit
of this problem.

Any further advice?

(remember, advicing me to do something that requires logging in isn't very
useful ;) )

could you state what 3 safe modes you have tried?
there are more than 3!

"Safe mode"
"Safe mode with command prompt"
"Safe mode with networking"

Either way, "safe mode" offers the fewest features, so that's one things
should still work in (even tough "safe mode" still uses a video and usb driver).

But now the question raises: does it matter?

Last Known Good Configuration
Enable VGA
Do not Autostart on System Crash

While in any Safe Mode, did you try "Administrator" account?

Tried that, forgot to mention.

Don't think they'll make much difference. There's no videodriver-problem and
there's no BSOD.

Yep, as well as the user account.
