I received a security alert and followed the directions from Norton to
update. After the update when I went to retrieve e-mail, Outlook would not
send or receive. It will work if I turn off the security. Is there a way to
correct this.

Can you provide the following information so that we can troubleshoot please:
1) Version of Outlook
2) E-mail environment (POP3, Exchange, etc.)
3) Any error messages, numbers (for example, what happens when you
send/receive?)
4) Any troubleshooting you've already done

Thanks!

The version I use is Outlook 2003
My e-mail is a pop 3, erols.com
I do not get an errror message, under send/receive it shows that sending is
compete, but under receiving it reads processing but it just hangs up there
and will not bring in the e-mail.
I have checked all the settings in the mail account and all is correct.
There was no previous problem before the Norton Security Update and all other
programs are working.

I turned off the e-mail scan and it did not help. Anyway is that a good idea
to do? The only thing that seems to work is to turn off the security, I
really feel that the update caused this but cannot find any help from the
Norton Site. Should I uninstall Norton and use some other Security and is
there one that is recommended to be better.

Click Norton personal firewall click configure. On the networking tab, click
Trusted and add the Pop3 mail server address and the SMTP server address,
Click OK. Hope this does it for you.

This is a common issue with NIS, I could not get any help from Symantec I had
to figure it out on my own.
Go to you personal firewall settings, click on the program tab delete all
programs from all locations (home/office/default/ect), when completed scan
for programs find all outlook and allow the app. You may want to try to start
outlook and see if it auto configures, if not run a scan.

Good luck

This did not work, it locked up the PC. However I found that if I disable
the Norton Firewall I do not have a problem with Outlook. Since I have the
Windows Firewall enabled, is it okay to just leave the Norton Firewall off.
Thanks for all your help.

You shouldn't run two firewalls at the same time.

Thank you. This has helped me solve my problem.
