Hi:

Trying to clean-up a friend's laptop running WinXP Home. Last item is
AdwareAlert.exe -boot which tries to run on power-up. I blocked it's entry in
the Startup folder; I manually uninstalled all references using Regedit; I
tried the SmitfraudFix.exe in Safe Mode; I used Killbox to delete several
lines in the registry.
I used WinPatrol to additionally delete its entry on Startup. Nothing works.
How can I delete this unwanted program??

Thank you.

Try turning off System Restore and then nuking it again. Once and if
this eliminates it, turn System Restore back on.

Download, install, update, and run Malwarebytes
http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebyt...4572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button

and Superantispyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html

You may have to boot into safe mode with networking to download and install.
Malwarebytes should be run from a normal boot, but Superantispyware can be
run from safe mode.

If possible, back up all your data before doing anything just in case.

Hi:

Yes, Malwarebytes has been run several times with updated definitions but
does not find this malware (nor any other: PC is reported as clean). I will
try the second software that you mention and report back.

Thank you.
