Because that's the way that Adobe set up their installer.

Why's that?

Turn UAC back on or it won't install.

Thank you. I'll try that, after I try the other three suggestions, then
I'll try Foxit. Then....I'm going to go buy my first Apple Computer.

I've not had any trouble checking the option to run in XP compat mode to
get Adobe to install.

I don't (normally) have UAC switched on.

Save Adobe Reader to disc and then right click it's .exe file and select
compatability mode and then tick Windows XP. It'll load fine and behave
fine.

It WILL install, Cal, and most of its functionality works fine. But open a
PDF with some interactive elements or layers, and try to print it ... you're
likely to have problems. I should've been more clear: MOST of Adobe Reader 8
will work satisfactorily with Vista, but Adobe IS aware of some serious
limitations, which they intend to have fixed in 8.1.

No problems at all installing (UAC turned on).

Bottom line: Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.0 is NOT COMPATIBLE WITH WINDOWS
VISTA! PERIOD! (Sorry for the all-caps, but this is pretty important!)
Adobe is promising a compatible Reader 8.1 to be released in May. In the
meantime, stick with Reader 7, if you're using Vista.

Thanks, but neither one worked.

One other attempt you might try, is to install Adobe in "Safe Mode". I
have
not attempted this myself, as Adobe installed perfectly fine with my
Vista
Home Premium Edition. However, I have come across articles about this
problem, and installing Adobe in Safe Mode has completed the
installation.
If you attempt this and still have issues, it is probably due to another
3rd
party application installed on your system. Type msconfig in the start
search window and open the Vista configuration utility. Select the
"services" tab, check the box marked "hide all Microsoft services", then
select disable all. Secondly, select the startup tab and select disable
all.
Reboot. This will shut down all running applications except for
necessary
Windows applications. After rebooting attempt to install Adobe,
hopefully
you should have no issues. After installation reboot your system a
second
time. Once on desktop, again launch the msconfig utility. Select the
General tab and check "Normal Startup" and you should be fine, this will
allow all applications to start normally. Let me know how it goes.

i have just updated to adobe 8.1 and vista has kicked the program out and i
can not install it again have moved over to foxit instead

Turn UAC **ON** to install Acrobat Reader 8.1.0

You may have a corrupted download. Download the file again, direct from
www.adobe.com and try to install using the new file.

Find the downloaded installation file for Adobe 8 and right click on it.
Chose Properties and pick the compatibility tab. Check box "run this program
in compatibility mode" and choose Windows XP. It will install properly.

Greg:
I've abandoned Adobe Reader long time ago because it is bloatware.
Try the freeware version of Foxit PDF Reader (www.foxitsoftware.com).
Been using it in Vista with no probs.

I'm convinced that trying to download and install an update over the older
version can lead to corruption of the install producing any number of error
messages and non-functioning of the program or failure of the new install and
corruption of the older version as well.

In order to install a new or different version of an application type, often
the existing application or program has to be completely uninstalled first.
The Windows Uninstall program is less than optimum at doing this and
frequently leaves remnant files and folders or registry entries of the
uninstalled program on your computer. Some software companies provide an
uninstall tool on their support website (i.e. AdobeFlash, Norton, McAfee)
which can help with this process, but often even these special uninstaller
tools leave remnants of the program on your computer that can block or
degrade the installation of the new program. You can further clean up your
computer manually as outlined in the following tutorial:

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/87249-unable-install-latest-version-program-vista.html

I have since found and used a program called "Smarty Uninstaller" that does
an even better job of uninstalling programs, even tough ones like McAfee and
Norton. You scan your computer and the program identifies all the programs
on your computer, listing those that have their own uninstaller program and
those that are only remnants of a program. First you click for it to use the
program's uninstaller, and then when it’s finished, Smarty UI identifies any
program remnants and will then uninstall the remnants (from files and folders
to registry entries). For Smarty UI (free trial period) or alternative
uninstaller Revo (free) see links below:

http://www.winnertweak.com/uninstaller/
http://www.revouninstaller.com/

After running the uninstaller program of your choice I recommend using the
Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to finish off the uninstallation. This
program is available at the following link:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

Once the program you're interested in is completely uninstalled, you can
then do a clean install of the new version without problems. Download Adobe
Reader without the Download Manager from this site (this gets around the UAC
on/off concern):

ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/8.x/8.1/enu/AdbeRdr810_en_US.exe

If all this fails, you can do a clean reinstall of your OS or switch to
another PDF reader like Foxit:

I have my UAC on but Acrobat8 wouldn't install on my laptop but Foxit Reader
is fine and it is easier to install, no problems.
