Adminstrator user

I have been using Win 2k for all my business & personal needs for 5 years. I
went about setting up a separate user on this XP computer, name Tim. I am
used to logging on as username "Administrator." I cannot seem to set up a new
user on this XP system with the name of "Administrator;" XP reports that
there is already a user named "Administrator," but such a user does not show
up as possible users who can log in. What am I missing here? Thank you.

From what you are saying you probably have XP Home where the administrator
is hidden once you create another account. The only way to use it is boot
with F8 for safe mode. If you created 'Tim' with admin privilege you can use
it for almost everything as the built-in administrator.

Windows XP Professional hides the built-in Administrator
account as soon as you create another account that is a member
of the Administrators group. If "Tim" is an admin account, you
won't see the Administrator account listed on the Welcome
Screen. The Administrator account was never meant to be used on
a regular basis. It's there for emergencies. If you want to
access the Administrator account you can do the following,

Go to Start -> Log off.
Log off from your account and you'll see either the Welcome
Screen or the Log on to Windows dialog box.
If the Welcome Screen is displayed, hit Ctrl + Alt + Del twice
to bring up the Log on to Windows dialog.
Enter Administrator in the User Name box and any password that
you assigned to this account.
Note: It's a good idea to password protect this account.

If you're using a computer that has Windows XP Home Edition
installed you'll have to boot into Safe Mode in order to access
the Administrator account.

Good luck

XP has a built in account called Administrator, that's why you can't create
one with that name. Once another account with admin privileges is created
the built in Administrator account is no longer visible. To access it for
XP Pro at the Welcome Screen do ctrl-alt-del twice, enter Administrator as
the user name and the password assigned to that account when XP was
installed. For XP Home it is only accessible through safe mode. Boot into
safe mode and Administrator will appear on the Welcome Screen. Normally the
password is unassigned (blank) so just click on it.

You should not use the built in Administrator account for day to day
activities in XP. That account should be set aside with a strong password.
For XP Home in safe mode assign a password to the account. Keep that
account aside to be used if something damages the normal working account.
Have at least one other account with admin privileges and any number of
limited user accounts for normal activities.

Don't do this! You're undermining your computer's security by doing so.
Administrators bypass all safeguards and permissions built into the
operating system, making your system much more susceptible to all stripes
of malware, user error and data corruption. You should only log in as
Administrator when you're changing system settings or repairing something,
then log out of Administrator as soon as you have accomplished your task.

If you hit ALT+CTRL+DEL at the welcome screen, you'll get the 2000-style
login screen and you can log in there as Administrator, but I strongly
suggest keeping that limited to the guidelines above.

You shouldn't use any Administrator account for day to day activities in any
version of Windows, for the same reason you shouldn't use Administrator
itself for day to day activities (these should be done in a normal user
(restricted) account. All accounts, especially Administrator, should have
strong passwords.

I have been using (evidently) the administrator account since i bought my
computer two years ago. I went to set up a second user and everything i used
to use disappeared. I now understand why.

Here's the question: Is there a way to move all my preference to a new
user--my desktop layout, my ie settings, my outlook settings and email
accounts, my excel toolbar, my favorites. Otherwise i think I'll have to go
back to the administrator account as I don't have the time (or energy) to
start over.

thanks for any help.

I evidently setup only the admin user when i bought my computer two years
ago. Yesterday I set up a second user and now everything "me" is missing. I
suspect it is this hidden administrator.

Here's my question: Is there a way to move all my settings from
administrator to a new user. I need my taskbar, my desktop, my outlook email
accounts and settings, my ie settings, my excel toolbar... Otherwise, I think
I'll have to use the now hidden administrator account as I have neither the
time or energy to start all over.

Thanks for any help.
