Adminstrator Account

Duane

I recently created several user accounts on my machine
with one having adminstrator function. As a result, we
can no longer access any of the original files, pictures,
videos we had loaded. I think this is becasue we started
using the computer under the default Administrator
account. The "Administrator" account name no longer show
and the system will not let me create an account with
this name.

Is there any way to reactivate the original Adminstrator
account or get at the documents we stored prior to
setting up the accounts?

You should be able to log in with your new user profile with the
administrative privileges and with My Computer navigate to c:\Documents and
Settings\Administrator\Administrator's Documents. The "missing documents"
should be in there. You may need to add yourself to the authorized users by
right clicking on the folder, selecting properties and then changing the
permissions to include your current user profile.

Press CTRL-ALT-DEL twice at the Welcome Screen, with no other users logged
on. You'll get the old Win2K style login. Enter Administrator and any
password on that account.

Optionally: To enable the Administrator account on the new Windows XP logon
screen, visit my web site, www.dougknox.com and go to the Windows XP
section. Follow the link for Enable Administrator Account ......

This small VB Script will make the registry change necessary for the
Administrator account to be available on the Welcome Screen. If you prefer
to do it manually, click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList\

Note: There is a space between Windows and NT in the above Key.

Add the Administrator account if necessary and/or change the Administrator
value to 1

Once you're in the Administrator account, you can move the files you need to
a more accessible location.
