I am using XP home edition with SP2 and I am the only user. How can I get
my PC to go straight to desktop without having to click on the Computer
Administrator icon when starting up?

to click on the Computer Administrator icon when starting up?

Go to Start -> Run.
Copy and paste the following into the Open box:

control userpasswords2

Click OK.
In the "Users for this computer" box, click on the account you
want to have logged on automatically.
Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer".
Click OK.
In the box that pops up, make sure the account you clicked on
earlier is entered next to User Name.
Enter your password twice.
Note: You can leave the password box blank if the account does
not have a password.
Click OK.
Reboot to see if you get the desired results.

Good luck

You're welcome. Glad to hear you got that fixed.

Thanks for the question and answer. It worked with me too. But is there a
more traditional way (click your way through from control pannel) to get to
that location to make the changes without going through the run command?

Here are two options you could try:

1. Courtesy of Kelly Theriot, MS-MVP
Add Control Userpasswords2 to Control Panel
Line 1, right hand column
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
This makes the alternate User Accounts applet available through
the Control Panel.
Note: This is what I do on my systems as well as many of the
computers I work on. It adds an icon in Control Panel named
User Accounts 2.

2. Download and install Microsoft's TweakUI PowerToy for
Windows XP.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
Run TweakUI and navigate to Logon -> Autologon. Enter the name
and password of the user you want to have logged on at startup.
Check the box and click OK.

Good luck

Since I dont have that log in option is there some way to make it LET me log
in as an administrator? In other words to make it ask? Thank you.

Thank You Nepatsfan,
I just joined this newsgroup and was looking for an answer on how to access
the administrator's password and happened upon your answer. Thanks so much. I
am trying to do a "system repair" on a Windows XP Home edition installed on
an HP Pavilion laptop that I had returned to the store for repair when the
hard disk crashed, or so they claimed. They originally told me they thought
it was the motherboard. They then sent it to HP for repair. They gave it back
to me and said that they "thought" that HP had replaced the hard disk and the
motherboard, but they weren't sure (lots of helpful information from Fry's,
the place I bought it from). Anyway, the system has had various problems like
one account, when you hit the start menu button, comes up with the right side
of the menu blank. That same account can't start media player. The computer
seems more sluggish, etc. I want to do a system repair or restore if I have
to, but it kept asking for the admin password and my original one didn't
work. I think HP must've put their own in during the new install on the new
hard disk. They wanted me to buy an extended OS warranty from them to fix it,
saying that the old warranty (that came with the computer when new) had
expired. Yeah, well the h%^& with them. They caused the problem. But now at
least I can use a new admin password.

Thanks Again,
Stu
