adm files

has anyone dared to modify default adm files?
be warned of the dangers that lurk

the company I now work for had modified their system.adm to reflect
custom choices on what drives to hide/show
since SP4 they had troubles upon opening a GPO object
the custom settings would no longer be available
the setting was still there but not visible anymore

is this by design?

the solution they had was to copy the modified adm in the policies
folder of the GPO
but with odd results
sometimes it would stick, sometimes it would not

what to do?

SP4 on the server makes changes to the adm templates replacing them. You'll
have to either create new ones, or replace the new with the old ones.

Changing the pre-built templates is a BAD idea for this reason. It is
better to define your own so that they're not overwritten as windows gets
updated.
