First of all, I am new to this format so if I misspeak, let me know.

I have several problems, all of which deal with e-mail contacts. I have had
to re-load all my contacts by hand, because I could not get Windows Mail to
accept any of the addresses from my previous system. The other problem is
that the addresses only hold for a short time when I try to access them by
using the first letter of the contact - yet I cannot get that reference if I
haven't tried to contact the person for a short while (five or six days).
So then I have to go into the contacts folder and retrieve the address from
there.

Is there a way to keep all e-mail contacts available in the usage file or is
this a built in feature so one can keep only those references that are often
used? Is there a way to move my addresses into Windows Mail?

Right now I am not too happy with Windows Vista; too many glitches. I am
even considering obtaining XP and use that as the norm instead of the
Windows Vista.

How to move the contacts list over depends on what email program
you are getting it from. If they're in a .pst file, which is usually from
Outlook, you have two choices of how to do it: 1. Install Outlook,
preferebly version 2003 or later, under Vista. Version 2002 also
runs under Vista, but with a few problems. Windows Mail needs
to use part of Outlook to help it understand .pst files. 2. Import
the .pst file first into Outlook Express on your old computer. Then
transfer from Outlook Express to Windows Mail, as described
below.

If you're getting them from Outlook Express, you cans also transfer
the old messages if you want them.

Also bring the .wab file across, since it contains the contacts. After
you copy the files to a directory on your Vista computer, make sure
the copies are read-write instead of readonly before you import
them into Windows Mail.

Note that Windows Mail maintains two separate address lists: the
contacts list, and a list of the last 29 addresses you sent messages
to. It uses this second list, not the contacts list, when it is completing
addresses. This list is very hard to edit; it's easier to just send
messages to the 29 addresses you want on the list.

If you'd rather use the contacts list when writing a new message,
don't type any part of the address. Instead, click on Tools in the
new message window, then Select Recipients.

If you still have XP CDs used on the same machine before, you
can install XP on it again. If it's a new machine and you get the XP
CDs elsewhere, note that many of the companies who make
hardware for new machines don't offer the drivers needed to
make the hardware work under XP, so you're taking a chance
it just won't work.
