Addressbook needed

R

Ritter197

How do I import the addressbook from Outlook 2000 on another computer (my
desktop) so I can use it on my laptop?

I have Outlook 2000 on both computers.

M

Milly Staples [MVP - Outlook]

You don't - you copy the .pst file from one computer to the other and use
File->Open->Personal folders file to access your contacts folder.

I copied the .pst folder from My documents on my desktop to a CD. Then
copied it back from the CD to My documents on the laptop.
I can clearly see it there, but when I go to Outlook 200 and use NEW to
prepare an e-mail, I cannot get to the Addressbook or for that matter the
..pst file.

When I click TO: it is just blank and does not give me the people I want to
send mail to.

Any ideas why it does not work?

First you must remove the read only attribute the file acquired from being
on a CD.
Then you must open the file in Outlook (File > Open) in order to access its
contents.

I must be still doing something wrong.
I went to the copied file (.pst) and unclicked the READ portion and then
said Apply.

Then I opened up Outlook 2000 and went to File and Open. I see there the
Outlook.pst. I try to open it and then wanted to see whether it worked. I
went to write a new message and when I click the To: it again shows me an
empty "addressbook".

How easy were the times when I just copied the WAB file and it always
worked.

Please be patient and I do appreciate Help since I am leaving on a trip and
wanted to take the Addresses with me.

PS. Should I have removed the Read tick before I burned to the CD maybe?

Simply opening the file will not place the contents into the address book
view.
Clarify what you want to do.
Do you want to keep this as a second data file in your Outlook profile, or
do you want to copy its contents into your current default Outlook Data
File? The latter would be better in the long run.
Also, you need to specify which mode of Outlook 2000 you are using. If you
don't know, look at Help | About, line 2. It will be either
"Corporate/Workgroup" or "Interment Mail Only"

I have Outlook Professional for workgroup.

I need to understand now the details of what I have to do to be able to
transfer the .pst folder on my desktop to my laptop.

The .pst folder works fine on the desktop.

It does at present not work on the laptop, even though I see the .pst folder

I have windows xp on both computers

Further, I have Outlook Professional on both computers.

Does this make it now very clear? I hope so. Thanks for help.

I assume all you want to do is transfer your Contacts, right?
If so, you would use Folder view (under the View menu) to display your
entire folder hierarchy. You should see both your laptop's PST file (which
will be the default in this profile) and the desktop's PST file (which you
just opened).

Then simply copy the contents of your Contacts Folder from your desktop PST
file to your laptop PST file. Then you can close your desktop PST file.
Restart Outlook. Your Contacts should appear in the Outlook Address Book. If
not, it will be easy to reset the Address Book to display them.

Yes, that is what I want to do. Get the ADDRESSES from Outlook of the
desktop to the laptop.

I opened Outlook2000 and selected the Folder View in View.

I see lots of folders that I use and have set up over the years. But now I
am stuck.
I even can get to the Contacts and when I open that folder I see all the
names.
But I am unsuccessful to COPY that to a floppy A:.

Why is that?

Point number 1:

I can see the CONTACTS in both the desktop and also now in the Laptop.

That is, when I go to My Documents in either Desktop or Laptop.

Point number 2:

What is NOT coming up is the Contacts list when I try to create a message on
the laptop and want to find the address when I click To:

At that point a BLANK address book or Contact list is seen.

Simply opening the file will not place the contents into the address
book view.
Clarify what you want to do.
Do you want to keep this as a second data file in your Outlook
profile, or do you want to copy its contents into your current
default Outlook Data File? The latter would be better in the long
run.
Also, you need to specify which mode of Outlook 2000 you are using.
If you don't know, look at Help | About, line 2. It will be either
"Corporate/Workgroup" or "Interment Mail Only"

I must be still doing something wrong.
I went to the copied file (.pst) and unclicked the READ portion and
then said Apply.

Then I opened up Outlook 2000 and went to File and Open. I see there
the Outlook.pst. I try to open it and then wanted to see whether it
worked. I went to write a new message and when I click the To: it
again shows me an empty "addressbook".

How easy were the times when I just copied the WAB file and it
always worked.

Please be patient and I do appreciate Help since I am leaving on a
trip and wanted to take the Addresses with me.

PS. Should I have removed the Read tick before I burned to the CD
maybe?

First you must remove the read only attribute the file acquired
from being on a CD.
Then you must open the file in Outlook (File > Open) in order to
access its contents.

I assume all you want to do is transfer your Contacts, right?
If so, you would use Folder view (under the View menu) to display your

I have the Contact list visible (and usable in Desktop)and visible in Laptop
..
I moved it to the items in Outlook shortcuts like INBOX, SENT, etc. There is
now also CONTACT .
I can OPEN THAT CONTACT folder and see all the names.
(we are talking laptop)

Now, when I try to SEND a message (laptop) I want to select when I click TO:
or CC :blush:r BCC: the Addressbook comes up EMPTY.

VERY confusing to me.

My problem is ONLY with the laptop. Not desktop.

Both use windowsxp, both use the Corp. version of Outlook 2000.

There must be 1 little step that I am missing and I cannot think of what it
is.

I must be still doing something wrong.
I went to the copied file (.pst) and unclicked the READ portion
and then said Apply.

Then I opened up Outlook 2000 and went to File and Open. I see
there the Outlook.pst. I try to open it and then wanted to see
whether it worked. I went to write a new message and when I click
the To: it again shows me an empty "addressbook".

How easy were the times when I just copied the WAB file and it
always worked.

Please be patient and I do appreciate Help since I am leaving on
a trip and wanted to take the Addresses with me.

PS. Should I have removed the Read tick before I burned to the CD
maybe?

message First you must remove the read only attribute the file acquired
from being on a CD.
Then you must open the file in Outlook (File > Open) in order to
access its contents.

I copied the .pst folder from My documents on my desktop to a
CD. Then copied it back from the CD to My documents on the
laptop.
I can clearly see it there, but when I go to Outlook 200 and
use NEW to prepare an e-mail, I cannot get to the Addressbook
or for that matter the .pst file.

When I click TO: it is just blank and does not give me the
people I want to send mail to.

Any ideas why it does not work?

You don't - you copy the .pst file from one computer to the
other and use
File->Open->Personal folders file to access your contacts
folder.

Due to

After furious head scratching, Ritter197 asked:

| How do I import the addressbook from Outlook 2000 on another
computer
| (my desktop) so I can use it on my laptop?
|
| I have Outlook 2000 on both computers.

How do you do that and keep both copies synchronized?
