I have Outlook 2003 in XP. I have something like 20 names in my address
book, yet when I write and search for a name it shows ALL THE NAMES that I
have ever had corresponded with, yet they do not show up in my address book.
Where the heck are all these names stored anyway??????
Aiandas

In your Autocompletion cache. It's a file with an NK2 extension that
matches the name of your Outlook profile. Turn off the feature if you
don't want it.

OK, how do I get to this section?

Complicated bugger isn't it?
Why is that it's tuned on by default? Shouldn't this be something that
should be turned on by the user only? Or is it so cumbersome to turn it on,
that's it's on by default for that reason?
Is it still possible after the fact to get access to these names?
Can I save this autocompletion cache address book?

The whole reason the feature exists is because so many users asked for
it. I suspect that's why it is turned on by default.
There is a 3rd party program that can view and edit the .NK2 file. You
can also use it to backup and restore the NK2 file and and to create
Contact Records from your NK2 data. You can read more about it here:

Cool thanks! I wonder if this 3rd party program now is going to cost me. but
on the flip side it's good to have these addresses archived, you never know
if they'll be needed!

Yes. It will cost you, but not much--certainly worth it if you plan to
make extensive use of your NK2 file.
If all you need to do is migrate an NK2 file to another installation,
there are ways to do that without the utility. For anyting more that,
you'll need it.

Well, it's too bad that considering how huge the Office Suite is, that this
feature is not something that's included. You pay and pay and it never
ends..................anyway thanks! I did DL the limited edition of the
software and I couldn't believe how huge the NK2 file is!!!!!!!!
not a good thing for those who are not even aware of this thing and don't
know how to get to it!

I don't think Microsoft realized that Outlook's users would recognize that
the autocompletion cache even existed, let alone that they would come to
value it as a data source. Autocompletion is a hastily tacked on feature,
but it is not robust and certainly not user friendly--yet another
opportunity for third party developers to fill in Microsoft's many gaps in
Outlook.
