When I try to use my address book in a mail merge or a label, it says that I
have to open microsoft exchange 1st. What is that all about?

It means that your Outlook Express address book is not compatible with Word.
Use Outlook for your addresses.

Graham, is there any way to use Outlook for addresses if it is not your
default mail client? I know I could do this in Word 2002, but it doesn't
seem to be possible in Word 2003.

If there is, I don't know it. Maybe the Outlook boffins would know. As I use
Outlook for e-mail it is not something I have experimented with.
