Address Book Backup File Locked

I made backups of data from a computer that seemed to be about to crash. It
has since stopped loading Windows XP Home. I want to add the addresses from
the address book from my backup of Outlook 2000 (but I want to avoid
overriding--even in the event of common names), but the file tells me it's
locked by another application and I should close it and try again. Any
suggestions since I can't recreate the backup?

If I get it to open, how do I add a new address book to Outlook 2000?
Any help is appreciated.

Outlook does not have a separate address book. All Outlook data is stored in
one file. The file you need is your Personal Folders file (*.pst) It's where
all the mail, calendar, contacts etc are stored. How did you back up this
file? How are you trying to access it?

I backed up on a CD. More than likely I just copied and saved the file to the
CD. I don't do that often enough, so I don't remember the exact procedure I
followed, I'm afraid. (I miss the good ol' days of floppies. Shoulda used my
jump . . . You know what they say about hind sight.)

So have you moved this file back to a hard drive and removed its read only
attribute? You must before Outlook can access it.

Yes, it tells me that access is denied even if I uncheck the read-only box.

Only you could know what you did to corrupt this file. How did you create
it? If the word export appears in your reply, then you have you answer
already.
