First eliminate any scumware.
See
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.
CWShredder is also available here:

**Post your HijackThis log to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the Spyware forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/ for expert analysis, not here.**
Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page:

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

I seem to be having the identical problem. Strangely enough it just happened AFTER I installed the latest ad-aware and ran it. I think the most problems were from a piece of sneak-ware called "Internet-Optimizer" that ended up on my computer. As-aware eliminated it, but my address bar searches no longer work. If anyone has come up with a fix for this yet, do tell

I have also been having the problem with the address bar search giving me the
http:///? Search whatever whatever
error and I finally located a fix that worked for me on another forum. Here it is
Run "Hijack This" and check the box for the following entry if it is found
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file
Close any open browsers and click FIX
Open your browser and try your address bar search function
FINALLY. Post if this also worked for you. Hope I helped
