Adding Safe Mode to Shutdown Options

J

Jim Easton

My current configuration with a wireless keyboard does not allow me to go
into safe mode during startup. I have to add another keyboard if I want to
go into safe mode. Is there a way to add Restart in SafeMode to Windows XP
Pro?

TIA

Try this.

Start | Run | Type: msconfig | Click OK |
Boot.ini tab | Check: /SAFEBOOT | Click Apply |
Click OK | When you see the prompt to restart the computer |
Click Restart

After you are done doing whatever in Safe Mode, don't forget to UNCheck:
/SAFEBOOT in msconfig.

Hi,

Yes, add /safeboot to the boot entry in boot.ini by running msconfig and
checking it in the boot.ini tab.

The easiest way I have found is to install the "Repair Console" from the
Windows XP CD. Note that if you are running SP2 you will have to borrow a CD
from a friend that has SP2 incorporated into the CD.

When the Repair Console has been installed, there is a 30 second window
(default - can be changed) to choose whether, or not, you want to enter the
repair mode. During this pause you can also press F8 for boot options, which
include various stages of safe mode.

This eliminates the need to guess when to press F8 during the boot process
to enter the "normal" boot option menu.

That can be a problem on a number of systems - mine, for example, which I
built less than a year ago.

I've also seen some older systems that can't get into the BIOS or Safe
Mode with the USB keyboard that shipped with the system. I took to
packing a PS2 keyboard when doing service calls.

The way around this if you have only the wired keyboard is to use msconfig
and the /safeboot checkbox on the boot.ini tab.

This, of course, assumes that you can actually get into regular mode. If
you can't, you will need to borrow or buy a PS2 or USB wired keyboard. The
PS2 keyboard assumes that your system *has* PS2 ports; some now don't.

Normal, Safe Mode and Command Prompt.

[boot loader]
timeout =15
default = multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS = "Windows XP Normal"
/fastdetect /sos)

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS = "Windows XP SAFE
Mode"/safeboot:minimal)

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS = "XP SAFE Mode with
Command Prompt" /safeboot:minimal(alternateshell)
