Adding Outlook Bar buttons

This is a newbie question - is it possible to add a new button to the contacts area in the Outlook Bar, and have it show a custom view of the contacts? The original contacts button is to remain untouched. All the posts I've read indicate that only a shortcut can be added to the Outlook Bar.
