Adding items to Master Category List using Outlook 2007

J

jeffg

I recently purchased a computer loaded with Vista and installed Outlook 2007.
I copied the .pst file from my old computer (which used Outlook 2002) to my
new machine. My question...is there any easy way to add the 100+ categories
from my old computers "Master Category" list to the new computer ? The only
categories that currently display are the "Color Categories". I have had
success using the New button to add each of my old custom categories one at a
time, but there has to be a better way ??

Thanks for the quick reply. Lots of good info, but no solution. Still
looking for a simple way to get Outlook 2007 to pull categories out of my
..pst file and add them to the Master Category list.

You can't natively. If you have access to the old computer you could
export the reg key that contained them, import it to the new machine and
perhaps extract them from there. Category Manager
(http://www.vboffice.net/product.html?pub=20&lang=en&cmd=detail&id=2006063)
MIGHT be able to do it.

Yes, Category Manager can import categories from any older version to
Outlook 2007. Just export the categories from the registry (from your old
computer), and import the *.res file via Category Manager on the new
computer.

If you don't have the old computer anymore, the old Master Category List is
lost. But with CM you still have the option to add all of the categories
that are assigned to your Outlook items to the new Master Category List.

Ben and Mike,

Thank you both for your response. Glad to have a definitive read that
Outlook 2007 can not handle this operation natively. Will look into Category
Manger. Still have the old machine, but will need to seek additonal info on
how to export categories from the registry.

Regards,
Jeff

For exporting you can use Category Manager as well, of course.

Or click Start/Run..., and enter "regedit", click OK. Then navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Categories

and clck File/Export.
