Adding HDD through PCI SATA card

Hi all,

I installed a PCI SATA RAID controller card in my pc, updated it's BIOS to
disable the RAID function (I just want a storage drive), and installed the
driver in windows XP - SP2.

Here is the rub. The PC BIOS recognizes the card and HDD, and so does
windows, but windows does not allow me to use the drive.

Windows recognized a SCSI controller card, and it recognizes the HDD on the
SCSI card, but in the "Computer Management" screen it shows that I have one
"Failed" drive and one "Foreign" drive, although it is the same drive. I
cannot import the foreign drive, or reactivate the failed drive.

I am using the most up - to - date driver and BIOS for this card, and
windows is seeing is and saying it is working normally, so what gives?

Any ideas?

Make: SYBA / Model: SD-SATA-4P
Updated BIOS: The Chipset is Silicon Image SiI3114, which comes in two
flavors. RAID and Non-RAID. I choose Non-RAID, although I tried both in the
end. The RAID is SoftRAID, and can be disabled through the BIOS.

Any Ideas?

Its a sata1 card, are you using a sata1 hd, or if sata2 hd is it jumpered
for sata1?

I am using a Seagate Sata1 Hdd.

This seems like a software problem to be, as all the hardware is recognized.

Any ideas?

I would use the seagate tools utility, available on Seagate site to test the
hd.

I note that the card manual doesnt say you need to use the F6 option to
install drivers from floppy, I find this unusual

I can try the Seagate tools, but the drive works fine if I plug it into the
MB SATA port. I only have two onboard SATA ports, and three SATA drives.

As far as i know, the F6 install option is only for fresh XP installs onto
the drive in question. This is just a data drive.

Any other ideas?

Usually with a drive connected to a new sata controler, which this card is,
its neccessary to F6 to install sata controller drivers from floppy during
the install or *repair install* of winxp.
The manual however states with an existing winxp installation its only
neccessary to install the drivers from the 'found new hardware' wizard -
I've not seen this before with a sata card.
