Adding extra fields to a linked table

Hi,
i have a really good Access program which i need to make some changes to but
no sure how. The program was written for me but i can no longer get the
developer to assist as he has moved on in his career. the program is for
quoting where i have a form with a table that will show the headings of each
part of the quote. next to each heading is a button to open the specific
detail to add material and labour costs etc which gives me a geneated cost
for that particular listed heading. the problem is that the form has cannot
show the generated cost because the details and the job breakdown use the
same table so when i try and sum a field, it seems to circular reference. my
way around this would be to add a field in the table that mirrors the costs
so i can sum this field instead. i am not great with access and currently the
table will not let me add a field because it is linked. i cannot find where
the table is linked as it doesn't show it in the relationships window. The
whole program is VB with very little access facilities.
My questions are these:
1. how can i add a field to the table without breaking the link
2. if 1 in not achievable, how can i find the link to replace afterwards
3. how can i get the new field to automatically copy the information from
"cost" field in the same table.

Assuming this is a split database - Tables in a back end and everything else
in a front end, you need to make your change in the back end.
If you don't know where the backend database is stored, click on the table
name and hover the mouse over it and the path should be displayed.
