Adding date automatically

I would like to have the date automatically to a date field on a form. I
would like it to put in today's date (using the date$) my problem is this. I
want it to put it in for new records only, I want to keep old dates there.
What should the code look like and where should it go?

Just make the field's DEFAULT =Date()
