Adding Contacts to and managing Distribution Lists in Outlook 2003

A few questions, thanks in advance for any assistance.

1) Is there a way to add a Contact to Distribution List(s) directly from the
Contact?

I constantly add Contacts and need to manage the multiple Lists that they
need to belong to, and the only way I've found is to add them to a List by
entering the list and Selecting members. And I'm aware of the Categories
method...

2) I notice that Distribution Lists properly recognize Contacts only if
they're in the format (First name Last name). This bars me from using
Categories to create my Distribution Lists because then I can't edit any
Contacts directly from the D List. My question is, Is there a better way to
do any of this? I'm extremely frustrated with Outlook currently... it seems
the D Lists are a major pain to manage if you have more than 5 people in
them, and Categories are just an inconvenient way of sending out mass
e-mailings. Am I just missing something simple? Complaining too much?
(probably)

3) I know that you can add Contacts to Categories very easily, and managing
Categories is rather simple, as well. Why in the world aren't D Lists as
simple to manage as Categories? I want to send an e-mail to a group of
people, and either I have to spend an extra several hours beforehand updating
each list and removing specific members here and there, or I have to select
their Category every time I want to send them an e-mail.

Reading my post, it's almost more of a rant than a question. If someone can
help me figure out a decent way of managing D Lists, or even just verify that
I'm not missing something simple, I'd really appreciate it.
