Adding Additional RAM - XP problem

Has anybody had a problem with XP crashing (due to an
internal internet explorer error) after adding RAM? I
have purchased the correct RAM for my motherboard,
bringing the total up to 1 GB. XP recognizes it, but I
have all kinds of problems - especially when I get on the
internet. XP is not liking this additional RAM - when I
pull it out, everything is fine. I've had problems
running applications like excel & Norton. Does anybody
have a solution, is there something I didn't do?

Your problem most likely is not due to the additional
RAM, but to bad RAM. Quite frequently, chips that are
purchased from anywhere can have issues. Try taking the
chip back to where you bought it and exchange it. This
should correct your issue. I've never seen XP complain
when it is getting MORE memory to play with.

The correct ram??? maybe you need to read up on how to
tweak the cas and other settings in your BIOS, Two
identical sticks can have issues.

My new XP computer, bought back in February, only came with one stick of
128MB RAM. Couple months later, I bought another stick of RAM, 256MB,
and put it in the other slot. Haven't experienced any problems yet...

Why didn't you provide satisfactory information? Try switching
the memory chips around. Take the original out and replace with the
new if it works then you have a motherboard problem. Read your
manual you may not be using the right slot. :-(

When you go beyond 512 mb, you may run into Vcache problems. I am not very
knowledgeable on the subject, but a Google search should be helpful.

The new RAM is most likely either defective or sub-standard.
WinXP is much more sensitive to borderline defective hardware,
particularly RAM and hard drives, than is Win9x/Me.

It's absolutely essential that any new RAM module be compatible
with both the motherboard and any other RAM module(s) in the system.
Additionally, there are sometimes jumper switches on older
motherboards that need to be reset for the new RAM configuration.
Consult your motherboard's manual.

Not in WinNT/Win2K/WinXP. That was an issue with Win9x.

Your problem has nothing to do with your having more RAM. If it
works without the additional RAM, but you have problems with it,
you either bought defective RAM, the wrong type of RAM, or RAM
not matched to your existing RAM.

No, this was a problem (an easily solved one, by the way) in
Windows 9X. There's no such issue in Windows XP.
