adding a symbol

we have docs open. i created a worksheet which is shared
by our network. the symbol option is greyed out. we need
to use the checkmark symbol. however, if i open a new
worksheet in excel, the symbol option is available. i
have tried changing the font to the math symbol to try
and get the checkmark symbol, but it doesnt work.
do i have to re-create my document again?

The Insert Symbol command isn't available in a shared workbook. You
could type it in the other workbook, then copy and paste it into the
shared workbook.

Or, you could insert the checkmark symbol holding the Alt key, and
typing 0252 on the number keypad.

Then, format the font as Wingding, and the checkmark will appear.
