how can i fdisk a new (additional) disk drive on an xp
machine, there is no fdisk command in command-prompt?
thanks

boot from a Start Up disk, '98, ME, whatever, and run fdisk from the a:
prompt

You can also go to...

Start (Menu)>Settings>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer
Management>Storage>Disk Management.

From here, you can view all installed drives as well as how there set up
(Partitioned) and so forth.

After you've physically installed the new drive, boot into the BIOS setup to
be certain the BIOS properly recognizes the drive.
If all is OK. Boot into WinXP, then go to the "Disk Management" utility.

Right click on the new drive and "fdisk" or partition the drive and format
from here.

If you don't plan on installing an operating system on this drive, you may
want to consider setting it up as a Basic Hard Drive with 1 Extended DOS
Partition. Then fill with as many Logical drives as you want (D,E F...).

Windows uses the NTFS as the standard XP Filing system, but you can use
FAT32 if you prefer.

Also note that if your existing drive has a Primary DOS Partition as well as
an Extended DOS Partition with multiple Logical drives and you put a Primary
DOS Partition on your new drive. Your new Drive Primary DOS Partition will
become drive D:\. Your existing Extended DOS Partition will then follow as
drive E:\, F:\...etc... Then your New Extended DOS Partition Logical drives
will become G:\, H:\...etc...

Don't mean to get confusing, but I tripped over this and wound up having to
start all over.

Booting from your system CD might to "fdisk" may be pretty straight forward
however, the "Disk Management" utility offers a nice "Windows" graphical
interface that makes things a little easier. I've used both.

Now if your into RAID Drives and the like. All that is available in the
utility as well.

All of my advice is solely based on my personal knowledge and experience.
So please use only what is useful to you.

Good luck!

Richard in VA.
