Adding a My Account feature to my web site

How can I add a My Account feature to my web site, where users register with
a user Name and Password, so that they can execute certain functions that
visitors that don't register cannot? Is there a common (simple-to-use) add-on
software program that anyone can recommend? Or does this have to be created
from scratch? Thanks.

All depends on what you want the user to be able to do or not do, and in most cases you would have
to custom write this to meet your requirements.

There are several add-ons, but it will depend on what your server supports
(asp vs. php, etc.). A very well-known and widely used product using ASP is
