Adding a dual processor

I had to rebuild a dual processor system after a power spike blew out one of
my processors and the hard drive....anyways I just recieved the replacement
Athlon MP processor. My question is can I simply add the second processor
without reinstalling Windows XP Pro? Thanks for your help.

Assuming the OS didn't get reinstalled after the loss of the processor, you
are still running the SMP kernel and HAL, though with only a single
processor. So add the processor and it will continue as it was, but using
both.

If you had to reinstall the OS after the loss, it probably loaded an single
processor Kernel and HAL. So you will need to update them.

Go to device manager / Computer. It should say something like ACPI
Multiprocessor PC. If it doesn't then change the Kernel and HAL.

It says ACPI Uniprocessor PC how do I change the HAL and kernel....

OK, after a little research, it appears that on boot, the system will see
the second processor and load (or attempt to load) the MP modules. I'm
surprised it went backwards to a UP module though.

So, just add the second processor (after turning your computer off), and
start it up. After it boots it may ask for your installation disks, so have
them handy. When it is up and running, check the device manager again and
see what it says.

If that doesn't work, we can force a load, but you don't want to try that as
a first option.

Marc,

It went backwords due to the fact that I did a clean reinstall of the O/S.
This clean install was after one of the processors and the hard drive failed
on me. The hard drive was not even recognizable to any BIOS! So I RMA'd the
processor and the hard drive, blah, blah.. SO I reinstalled the system with a
new hard drive two weeks ago. Just today I recieved the replacement processor
and I am tempted to put it back into the workstation. The engineer that is
using the system is using it for high end laser beam analysis...and the
calculations take longer without the second processor <whimper>. Is this
enough background information for you! hah...

OK, that makes sense.

Hopefully, it will be an automatic upgrade ;=)

Just Right Click on the "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" in device manager and update
driver - manually choose to update and choose "ACPI Multiprocessor PC", say
OK ever how many times it asks, the OK to reboot. Once you reboot WinXP Pro
should recognize both, otherwise, you'll need to do a "repair in place"
installation of WinXP Pro.
