adding a count column

I need to add a column that gives a unique number to each row (except
the first or label row) in an excel database. From #1 on.

How do I do that?

Select an empty column................A for example.

In A2 enter 1

Right-click on the fill handle and drag down as far as you wish.

Release button and "Fill Series"
