Hello,

I've got a suggestion that could be very useful and helpful :

* We should be able to add a comment to a message received in Outlook ; just
as like we already can do in Excel or into a Word document (e.g. : answered
by phone / called on + date, time / cancelled / see mail xxx etc etc...).
Just like in Word or Excel, the comment would appear if we move the mouse on
it...
Easy, silly, but useful to manage your everyday planning :-))

Do you think this can be done ?...
If yes, it would complete perfectly the new "Fast Clic" option developped in
Office Professional 2007

Thanx for keeping me informed about the process given to this suggestion.

Kind regards,

Dom

Already possible through Other Actions-> Edit Message

You can then type in the message or attach a file or item to it.

Hi Dom,

Outlook tries to keep track of as much as it can for you already. Your
suggestion unfortunately isn't as simple as it sounds, because providing
this kind of comment would require the email storage to support this
feature. Outlook supports its own Personal Folder files, for which this
could be implemented. It also supports Exchange though, and I don't know
how difficult this would be to implement there. The third major storage
format it supports is IMAP, and that standard for sure wouldn't support
such a feature. For example, the fast click category assignment you
referred to is not available for IMAP (color categories are not
available at all for IMAP).
Your suggestion will definitely not be considered for Outlook 2007. We
are too late in the product cycle for any major changes to happen in the
product. Right now, Microsoft focuses on fixing bugs and improving
stability and performance. The only way you will find out whether
Microsoft took your suggestion or not is when you either see it in
Outlook 14 or not (MS is going to skip #13).
Maybe this might help you though: Open a message by double-clicking it.
Then on the Message tab, Actions group, click Other Actions and select
Edit Message. Now you can edit the message itself and enter your comment
e.g. as the first line.

along with roady's suggestion, you can add a short comment as a flag for
follow up - just type over the flag for follow up text.

There is a 3rd party utility that you can use to add comments but I don't
know if it works with outlook 2007 yet. it's called outnote and is linked at
http://www.slipstick.com/addins/tasks.htm.

This won't work with IMAP though, but it does work with Personal Folders
(POP3 messages) and Exchange.

Is the OP using IMAP?

I don't think the OP ever told us what he is using.

It seems that color categories are partially supported for IMAP:

- You can add the category field to the folder view and use it
- If you flag an item, you can set a category in the to-do bar
- You can see the color category when you open the message
- If you click on the color category strip in the message view, you can
change category

However:

- The "Categorize" ribbon item does not appear for IMAP messages
- Adding "Categorize" to the Quick Access Toolbar leaves it greyed out

So, is this a "unsupported feature" or an incompletely implemented one?

Will there be a patch to enable direct access to "Categorize" for IMAP
message?
