If I add a raid ide controller to my computer and move my existing hard
drive to the controller and add a second hard drive for mirroring, can I
retain the data or do I loose all data?

The answer depends on not only the controller, but the firmware
release of the controller.

If I were you, I'd contact the support people for the controller you
are looking for. (I'd also back up, just in case. Bad things
sometimes happen. Having your data mirrored is not the same as having
your data backed up)

You can use the controller to build a mirror array & tell it to copy your
current drive to the new one but be sure & load the RAID controller's driver
to your new drive before taking it off the IDE controller. Additionally I
would echo a previous poster & tell you to back up all your data first & to
remember that a mirror array is no substitute for a good backup regime.
