Michael

I have a Dell 2300 with windows xp home. I have installed
a canon bubble jet and hp laserjet 1100 on the system.
When I go into printers and faxes the printers are not
listed. If I click on add printer nothing happens. I
opened an application like word or internet explorer and
they see both printers. When I send a job to the canon
it prints fine but when I send a job to the laser all it
prints is junk. I am using windows xp embedded drivers, I
have also tried hp's pcl 5 drivers and it does the same
thing. What can I do to get the add printer wizard to
work and get the printers to show up in the printer and
faxes.

Please reply to this posting or email me at
(e-mail address removed)

Thanks
Michael

Is the print spooler running?

From the command prompt, type

net start spooler

(and hit enter)

Go back into the Control Panel and click on Printes & Faxes. Are they back?

Sounds like two separate issues: add printer wizard/printers folder doesn't
work, and you LJ 1100 prints junk.

First issue: I've seen a number of cases where printui.dll got replaced. Try
running sfc /scannow from the command line. If that fixes the problem, I'd
appreciate it if you could post/send the log that sfc generates to see what
files got replaced.

Second issue: are you sure you've got the right driver ? What kind of junk
does it print - could it be that you're using the PostScript driver on a
PCL-only printer ?

No the printers are not back. The spooler service is
already running. Any other suggestions to try?

I ran sfc /scannow and it scanned the system copied files
from the cd and finished. It did not see a log file
generated and if one was I have not idea where it was
put. The printers still do not show up in the printers
and faxes and the add printer wizard still does not work.
I did not even try printing again because I want to
figure out this problem first. Any other suggestions I
can try?

Sorry, the information on what sfc did should be in the event viewer, not in
a log file. On the other hand, it didn't fix the problem to begin with.

There is one app that I know of that tricks the system file protection,
LanTastic 8. Do you have that one installed ? If so, manually copy
printui.dll from the CD (navigate to CD i386 folder, type "extract
printui.dl_ %windir%\system32\printui.dll") and reboot. (If it doesn't allow
you to overwrite printui.dll, rename it to e.g. printui.old.dll)

If that is not the case: do you have any other non-mainstream apps on your
machine ?
