Can these to programs be configured to scan automatically at a predetermined
intervals? If so, how?

Hey Bob;

Both Ad-Aware (SE personal v6.181) and Spybot (v1.3) can be set to
automagically scan at start up. Spybot also can be scheduled. It
doesn't appear that Ad-Aware can be however.

I found it in SpyBot but when I tried to save the timed operation I got an
error message "you do not have permission to perform the requested
operation". I am the administrator with all privileges on XP Pro. Any
ideas?

First idea that pops into my head is go on over to their forums. Nice

Go to Control Panel and click on
"Scheduled Tasks"
In XP you can select a program to schedule.
