Adaptec 2820SA Logical Device Failed

System: WinXP SP2
Supermicro X6DAE-G2
2 x Xeon CPU 3.40 GHz
8 x Western Digital Caviar RE 400GB SATA
Adaptec 2820SA
Bios: b11564
Driver: b11737

Configuration:
4 RAID 0 Arrays (2 disks in each array)

Problem:
Playing Quicktime files causes a "Logical device failed", independent
of the file or which array the file is located on.

Fortunately, the the device can be "Forced online" using Adaptec
Storage Manager.

I, naively, thought that this would be a problem Adaptec would be
concerned with, unfortunately, Adapetc claims that this is a problem
with the Quicktime software. But my RAID just crashed...

I would appreciate any work around to this problem.

I bought one of these for use under Linux. After messing
around wwoth it for some weeks, I found that is was essentialluy
an expensive paperweight. Unrealiable, slow, hard to manage,
no tools for automatic monitoring.

I think Adaptec islying through theior teeth. Userspace software
should not at all be able to crash a hardware RAID controller.
I would advise you to thrwo this pice of garbage out and to never
buy Adaptec again...

Arno, I hear you: A-Crap-Tec

Any idea of a controller that I can use instead that will allow me to
maintain my arrays (and data)?

It sounds like you are off to a good start with the Supermicro board. It
totally befuckles the imagination of why someone would buy top notch
hardware as Supermicro and cripple it with cheap-ass SATA drives? Your
system is designed and optimized to be used with SCSI. Sadly Supermicro
decided to add a SATA interface to this board for entry-level applications.
Get yourself an LSI MegaRAID card and bring that system to life.

I have completely moved to software RAID (Linux). However 3ware
has a pretty good reputation from what I hear. At least under Linux,
which should mean they are pretty good under Windows too.
